Both ductile iron pipes and ordinary cast iron pipes contain graphite. In ordinary cast iron, the graphite exists in a flake form. Since flake graphite has relatively low strength, it creates numerous weak points within the iron structure, resulting in lower strength and greater brittleness.
In ductile iron pipes, the graphite exists in a spheroidal (nodular) form. These spherical graphite nodules have a much smaller impact on the strength of the material than flake graphite. Therefore, ductile iron pipes offer significantly higher strength, better toughness, and improved durability compared with ordinary cast iron pipes.
